I have always associated cucumber salad with summer – picking fresh cucumbers from the garden and having them for Sunday dinner.
I thought that we Poles are specialists when it comes to preparing cucumber salads but I was very surprised to know that it is not the case.
It turned out that Hungarians also make cucumber salads. They are not any worse than ours but maybe even better 😉
The idea of Hungarians about cucumber salads is very similar to that of the Poles. In contrast to us, however, they do not simply use salt but make a marinade composed of salt, vinegar and sugar.
The difference is also the fact that you will find garlic in Hungarian cucumber salads and, of course, as it is for Hungarians – sweet paprika.
I invite you to try this type of salad. I think that you will like it and you will make it often.
Ingredients for cucumber salad.
- 400 g fresh cucumber
- 1,5 teaspoon of salt
- 400 ml of water
- 1,5 tablespoon of sugar
- 2 tablespoons of vinegar
- 2 garlic gloves
- 4 tablespoons of sour cream
- 1/6 teaspoon of powdered sweet paprika
How to prepare cucumber salad.
Wash the cucumbers but do not peel them. Cut them up into slices of 1 millimetre each.
Press the garlic through a press.
Mix salt, sugar, vinegar and water in a bowl. Add the sliced cucumbers. Mix and set aside for an hour. Afterwards, drain the excess water from the cucumbers but leave a small amount of it on the bottom.
Place some sour cream on top of the cucumbers, add garlic and powdered paprika.
Cool in the fridge before serving.
Good to know when making cucumber salad.
I used a small slicer to cut the cucumbers. The slices came out perfectly even and thin. If you cut the cucumbers with a knife, try making the slices as thin as possible.
This salad can be served by itself, i.e. without cream, or without garlic or without paprika. But for me it tastes best as presented above, with all the additions.
