Waldorf Salad is a salad made from a combination of fruits, nuts, celery, mayonnaise and baby gem lettuce.
The fruits most commonly used for this salad are apples and grapes. It is usually served as an appetiser, main course and also as a snack at special events.
When I was making my Waldorf salad, I completely gave up apples. I substituted them with chicken ham 🙂 In addition, I also added Stilton cheese and sweet corn. My version of “Waldorf salad” turned out to be very nice 🙂
Ingredients for Waldorf salad.
- 6 celery sticks
- 1 small baby gem lettuce
- 300 g of chicken ham
- 60 g of walnuts
- 180 g of canned sweetcorn
- 250 g of grapes
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- a pinch of black pepper
- 150 g Stilton cheese
- 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 4 tablespoons of sour cream
- 6 tablespoons of mayonnaise
How to make Waldorf salad.
Cut the chicken ham and Stilton cheese into medium-sized cubes. Cut the walnuts into large pieces.
Cut the celery into small pieces. Cut the grapes in half, remove the seeds if they have one.
Cut the baby gem lettuce into large pieces or rip them with your fingers.
Sauce: combine salt, pepper, mayonnaise, cream and lemon juice in a bowl.
Mix the cut grapes, chicken ham, cheese, nuts, corn, lettuce and celery in another bowl. Pour sauce over the other ingredients and mix thoroughly.
Cool the salad in the fridge.
Good to know when making Waldorf salad.
You can add apples to the salad. If you do, choose a type, which is not too hard and has an acidic taste.
You may serve the salad with bread, crackers or just simply eat it by itself.
As for meats, chicken ham works best for me in salads. I would not use any other type of ham.
