Twisted donuts – kkwabaegi
Korean twisted donuts, i.e. kkwabaegi, are an idea for original-looking donuts with cinnamon sprinkles. Ingredients for twisted donuts – kkwabaegi.
- 450 g all-purpose flour
- 50 g melted butter, cooled
- 7 g instant yeast
- 50 g powdered sugar
- 200 ml lukewarm milk
- 1 egg “M”
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 10 ml rice vinegar
- oil for frying
Additionally:
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 4 tablespoons of crystal sugar
- 1,5 tablespoon of powdered sugar

How to make twisted donuts – kkwabaegi.
Pour lukewarm milk into a bowl, add instant yeast, mix and set it aside for 5 minutes. Next, pour flour, powdered sugar, yeast dissolved in milk, egg, salt and vinegar into the bowl of a kitchen mixer and mix the ingredients for a few seconds. Then pour in the melted butter and continue kneading the dough for 8 minutes. Afterwards, cover the bowl with the dough with a cloth and leave it in a warm place for 1.5 hours to rise.
Place the risen yeast dough on the kitchen counter, knead for a while and divide into 18 equal pieces (45 g each). Form the pieces of yeast dough into balls, then roll each ball into 25 cm long ropes. Holding one end of the rope, twist it slightly in one direction, then grab both ends and tighten. Place the twisted donuts on the kitchen counter, cover with a cloth and set it aside for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, turn the donuts over, cover with a cloth and continue rising the donuts for another 15 minutes.
Pour a large amount of oil into a wide pot and heat it up. When the oil is hot, reduce the heat to medium and place in the risen donuts. Fry the donuts until golden on both sides for about 4 minutes. Place the fried donuts on a plate lined with a paper towel.
In a medium-sized dish or bowl, mix powdered sugar with cinnamon and granulated sugar, then sprinkle the donuts thoroughly with sprinkles – do it immediately after frying, when the donuts are still warm or hot. Twisted donuts taste best when served after preparation, on the same day, as that’s when they are the freshest.

Good to know when making twisted donuts – kkwabaegi.
I did not dust the yeast dough with additional flour because I did not see the need for it. If for some reason your dough becomes sticky while forming donuts or when they are rising, sprinkle it with a little flour.
If you want the donuts to be of equal thickness, when forming them into ropes, make sure that the center of the rope is slightly narrower than their ends/sides. I don’t pay much attention to it and form the ropes with the same thickness in the middle and ends.
